Super Bowl Prediction

It's time to make my Super Bowl 43 prediction... The Pittsburgh Steelers 27, the Arizona cardinals 16. This is based on empirical statistical analysis, access to confidential proprietary information known only to a select few, based in the pentagon and discussed during the Joint Chief Of Staff's briefing at the White House.

President Obama went public yesterday with his pick (the Pittsburgh Steelers) and who wants to disappoint the president of the United States? There's rumors floating around the burg that Dan Rooney is up for Ambassador To Ireland... But only if the Steelers win on Sunday. So obviously there is a great deal riding on this football game.

No matter who you are rooting for hope that the Steeler score ends in a seven and the cardinals in a six, those are my numbers for the pool... lol Have a great Super Bowl weekend, be safe and enjoy the game!

'Veggie Love': PETA's Banned Super Bowl Ad

I'm a big fan of the Super Bowl commercials, and can't wait to see this years. There's a new Coke commercial with number 43 that I'm interested in seeing. Although these two ads are not bad either .... I'm more of a meat eater than a vegetarian, but hey I like salads!

Stimulus Bill Highlights for VR

SENATE summary version of the S. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (also known as the Stimulus bill), which Summary, like its HOUSE counterpart, includes $500 million for VR.

The Senate Summary, which was released on Tuesday, provides under Education and Training the following: "EDUCATION AND TRAINING In order to compete in the 21st Century, Americans must have a well-educated workforce, capable of adapting to an ever-changing economic environment. Investing in education now will ensure that the next generation of American workers is ready and able to meet the challenge of global competition. In the near-term, millions of workers have seen their jobs disappear, and find themselves unable to match their skill sets with existing opportunities. Providing job training in new and expanding fields will help to lower the unemployment rate and help today's workers better compete against foreign competition.

Highlights include: TOP LINE SPENDING OF APPROXIMATELY $125 Billion EDUCATION: -- $79 BILLION State Fiscal Stabilization Fund includes $39 BILLION to local school districts and public colleges and universities, distributed through existing State and Federal formulas: $15 BILLION to States as incentive grants as a reward for meeting key education performance measures; and $23 BILLION to States for other high-priority needs such as public safety and other critical services, which may include education.

-- Title I: $12 BILLION to help close the achievement gap and enable disadvantaged students to reach their potential. -- SPECIAL EDUCATION/IDEA: $13 BILLION to improve educational outcomes for disabled children. This level of funding will increase the Federal share of special education services to its highest rate ever.

-- Pell Grants: $13.9 BILLION to increase the Pell Grant maximum award and pay for increases in program costs resulting from increased eligibility and higher Pell Grant awards. The bill supports an increased Pell Grant maximum award of $281 in the 2009-2010 academic year and $400 in the 2010-2011 academic year. This aid will help 7 million students pursue postsecondary education.

TRAINING -- TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT SERVICES: $3.4 BILLION for job training including State formula grants for adult, dislocated worker, and youth programs (including $1.3 billion to create up to one million summer jobs for youth). The training and employment needs of workers also will be met through dislocated worker national emergency grants, new competitive grants for worker training in high growth and emerging industry sectors (with priority consideration to "green" jobs and healthcare); and increased funds for the Job Corps and YouthBuild Programs. Green jobs training will include preparing workers for activities supported by other economic recovery funds, such as retrofitting buildings, green construction, and the production of renewable electric power.

-- VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION STATE GRANTS: $500 MILLION FOR STATE FORMULA GRANTS TO HELP INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES PREPARE FOR AND SUSTAIN GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT. -- Employment Services Grants: $400 MILLION to match unemployed individuals to job openings through State employment service agencies and allow States to provide customized reemployment services.

When I think of a stimulus plan, these are the types of expenditures I approve. I still do not want 50,000,000 for the arts, and 300,000,000 for STD's.... But Congress is always going to add pork into any plan.

An elephant: A mouse built to government specifications. -Robert Heinlein

Is it just me or do you think Congress is giving away too much money to the wrong people? I hate to see billions go out the door with no oversight and very little planning. 1.2 million dollar office make overs and special interest pork projects, 50 million for STDS, 50 million for the arts... how is this saving our economy? Pa has a 2 billion deficit how is Gov. Ed Rendell fixing this? He plans to layoff 2000 state employees... is this the right thing to do?

43

It's funny when you start to think about numbers, you start to see patterns and notice them more. Take the number 43, on Sunday the Pittsburgh Steelers will play in Super Bowl 43 against the Arizona cardinals in Tampa Florida.

This year was President George W Bush's last year in office as the 43rd President Of The United States. The Steelers probably would not be in the Super Bowl if it were not for number 43 Troy Polamalu. He is having an outstanding year and made that key interception against the Baltimore ravens. Yesterday the pick four number in Pennsylvania was 0043. Today ABC News said U.S. Steel was only operating at 43% capacity.... Have you noticed any other ties to the number 43?

New Collar

The temperatures hit 50° here in Pittsburgh yesterday and the really big news is my van started! Nala needed dog food so we headed down to pet smart. It felt really good to be out of the house after a few weeks hibernation. While I was there I also picked up her necessary dog treats, and a new pink collar.

Since Nala is semiretired I've decided to let her glam it up a bit with a bright pink collar. This is her first pink collar, she usually has red, purple, black, or blue. It looks really good on her, check back for pictures later today.

Money Pit

The ongoing Van saga continues with Dead battery issues. So as a last resort I'm going to purchase this heavy duty battery charger / starter from Sears. At least I will not have to call AAA to jumpstart my van anymore. If this no longer works I will be forced to purchase a new van. I'm out of options, I give up....

Inauguration Day

Today Obama will be sworn in as the 44th President Of The United States Of America. I'm proud to say that I voted for him, and that today I am hopeful. Hopeful that he keeps the promises he made on the two year campaign trail... I am hopeful when he includes all people, including people with disabilities in his speeches.

What changes would I like to see in America? Accessibility, Access To Technology, Inclusion and visitability .

Accessibility: since the passage of the ADA in 1990 access has improved, but physical barriers are still the standard, not the exception.

Access To Technology: technology exists to empower and improve the lives of individuals with disabilities, but the funding sources for this technology are practically nonexistent. Every individual should have the access to technology that he or she needs to compete fairly in all aspects of American Life.

Inclusion: for a society to be successful all members should have a chance to contribute. This includes individuals with disabilities!

Visitability: all new home construction should include visitability. All homes should have one barrier free entrance, and one accessible bathroom and bedroom. By requiring these changes homes would be accessible from the start, as individuals age they could stay in these homes with no need to retrofit.

Doctors Appointment

I had a doctor's appointment scheduled for this morning or so I thought. Its 17° here and of course my van would not start, but that's a story in itself. So I bundled up and drove my chair several blocks (1/2 mile) down the street to the doctor's office. I needed to drive on the street because all the sidewalks and curb cuts are covered in snow. I arrive at the doctor's, get all my winter arctic gear off, find my insurance card and talk to the receptionist only to find out my appointment was scheduled for last Monday....

But now the obsessive compulsive voice in my head is screaming I put the appointment in my phone I know it's the 19th.... But I still needed to reschedule, and probably go through all of this again. Another fabulous day in quad land...

Polamalu's interception leads Steelers to AFC title, Super Bowl trip

Here we go Steelers, Pittsburgh's Going To The Super Bowl! Well it's been a long season and I'll be the first to admit I had my doubts, but what a fantastic AFC championship game. When the number one and number two defense meet on the field the game guarantees hard hitting action and that's exactly what happened last night.

The team can enjoy the AFC victory for today and start planning on beating the Arizona cardinals tomorrow for the big game on February 1, 2009 in Super Bowl 43.

Service Dog Sense

It's been awhile since I talked about my service dog Nala. She's 10 years old and I have had her a little over eight years now. She is a Susquehanna Service dog from Harrisburg Pennsylvania. I could not ask for better K-9 companion and friend than her.

We are together practically 24 / 7 and she really understands my moods, habits and needs. It's gotten so I hardly have to give her any commands. Nala knows where she needs to be in relationship to my wheelchair. We have our daily routines which she knows well. I wish everyone could have a dog like Nala, she exemplifies all the traits and characteristics of the perfect labrador retriever.... But I could be prejudice.

Saturday Sports Report

Last night the Pittsburgh penguins played a great game against the Anaheim ducks here at home. The penguins came away with a 3 to 1 win which the team desperately needed. The penguins have so many players out injured it would take half the blog to list them all. If you played defense in high school, I hear there holding open auditions at the arena this afternoon....lol

If you're going to the AFC championship game tomorrow you better wear your long Johns, the weather forecast is frigid... Let's go Steelers!

Mike Tomlin and Iron City Parody --

Here We Go Steelers

OK, I thought yesterday was cold but I woke up this morning to -4° temperatures on my outside thermometer and 69° temperatures inside the house. Fortunately I'm dressed for the weather enjoying some earl grey Tea.

This is the big weekend for Steeler football! The AFC championship will be played on Sunday at 6:00 PM. I have to admit I was a very skeptical fan all season long. I was critical of the offense and lack of running game but I believe the Steelers can beat the Baltimore ravens and make it into this year's Super Bowl.

So get your black and gold on, fire up the grill, put some beer on ice or in my case on my back porch.... And get ready to cheer Pittsburgh on to the Super Bowl!

Thursday, January 15, 2009

Frigid Thursday

It's only 8° today and the temperature will be falling throughout the day. Thankfully it's a comfortable 72° in here. I'm very fortunate that the house stays warm and I started off my day with a mug of hot Tea. I realize many individuals are not so fortunate. In weather conditions like this, it's always good to check on friends and neighbors especially the elderly or individuals with disabilities to ensure their well being.

Every year I listen to a newscast were an individual starts his or her house on fire in several ways.
1. Trying to dethaw their frozen water lines by using a torch.

2. Using candles or a gas or electric stove as a heat source.

3. Faulty kerosene heaters or malfunctioning wood stoves.

Please exercise the utmost caution around your home. An open flame of any kind is potential for disaster... Don't be another winter statistic.

Bin Laden 'invites jihad' for Gaza in purported message - CNN.com

Bin Laden 'invites jihad' for Gaza in purported message - CNN.com
Every time the news reports a new message from Osama Bin Laden I am skeptical. It's always a audio message, never a video which would be easier to confirm it is actually Osama. I personally believe he was killed.

This new call for a jihad against Israel is a pathetic attempt By Al Qaeda to grab worldwide headlines. Hamas, Al Qaeda and Hezbollah are all significantly weaker since 9/11 and are doing everything they can to remain relevant.

I have been following the conflict in Gaza very closely and have the following opinions. First I feel extremely bad for the innocent Palestinians who are caught up in this conflict. I blame Hamas for the deaths of the civilian population in Gaza. CNN had pictures of Hamas fighters setting anti tank mines with several children standing nearby. Hamas uses the Palestinian people as human shields, they are cowardly terrorist, plain and simple.

Israel is being attacked by rocket fire from Gaza and Lebanon. They have every right to defend themselves. Israel closed all settlements in Gaza and still the attacks continued. Israel could not completely open the borders to Gaza because Hamas continued to smuggle in weapons from Iran. Hamas created tunnels along the border with Egypt and continued to smuggle in weapons, what choice did Israel have other than an invasion?

Hamas does not want peace. If there was peace, Hamas would have no power.

Penguins Win Four To Two

Last night the Pittsburgh penguins crushed the Philadelphia flyers 4 to 2 in Philadelphia. The pens played a great game and used their heads to get a much needed victory. I liked how the penguins controlled the neutral zone, did not take stupid penalties and chipped and chased the Puck... Hopefully they adopt the same style of play tonight at home against the Washington capitals, Let's Go Pens!

Check out the blog Face Offs And First Downs for a great fight video and interesting take on last night's game.

Snowing in Pittsburgh

Well I just brought my little dog in from outside, she was out for about 10 minutes and is covered in snow. What is it about labrador retrievers and snow? When the weather turns cold and the snow starts coming down, she wants outside every 15 minutes.

The weatherman is predicting some arctic cold coming into the Burg the next few days. I really don't have to go outside until Monday, so it looks like I will be hibernating until then.

The penguins will be playing the flyers tonight, I'm looking for a win in Philadelphia. The penguin sure need a win and I hope they beat Philadelphia!

AFC Divisional Playoffs: Steelers return to AFC final

AFC Divisional Playoffs: Steelers return to AFC final
What a fantastic game yesterday! It was nice to see the Steelers put 35 points on the board and control the entire third quarter. The defense was fantastic as always but I was very happy to see the running game return to Pittsburgh. Hopefully the same team shows up on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.

With Philadelphia playing Arizona in the NFC championship game there's a possibility of a Pennsylvania Super Bowl. It would be great to see Pittsburgh play Philadelphia for all the marbles. I think if this happens the game should be moved to Heinz Field.... Would that be too much to ask?

Blizzard of 2009

So for the last two days the local news has been scaring everyone with winter weather advisories. Predicting four to 12 inches of snow depending on your location. So like every other Pittsburgher I had to lay in the essential supplies of milk and bread for the upcoming blizzard. Let me tell you, I woke up this morning to about 2 inches of snow.... What a surprise the weatherman got it wrong again today.

The sportscasters are all abuzz about how the cold weather will affect the play of San Diego against the Steelers on Sunday. San Diego's record is five and three when playing in 20° weather or below. I personally do not think the cold weather will affect either team. A team is made up of individuals from throughout the country, these players are used to playing in the cold. The great thing about the weather is that both teams play in it... Or as my cross country coach used to say " you can change the weather, so get out there and run".

Joke

STEELERS BABY
A Pittsburgh Steelers fan is drinking in a Cleveland bar, when he gets a call on his cell phone. He hangs up, grinning from ear to ear, and orders a round of drinks for everybody in the bar, announcing his wife has just given birth to a typical Pittsburgh baby boy weighing 25 pounds. Nobody can believe that any new baby can weigh in at 25 pounds, but the Steelers fan just shrugs and replies: "That's about average back home, folks, like I said, my boy's a typical Pittsburgh baby boy."
"He's gonna be a Pittsburgh Steelers football player." Congratulations showered him from all around, amid many exclamations of "WOW!"
One woman actually fainted due to sympathy pains.
Two weeks later, he returns to the bar. The bartender says: "Say, aren't you the father of that typical Pittsburgh baby that weighed 25 pounds at birth? Everybody's been making bets about how big he'd be in two weeks."
"So, how much does he weigh now?"
The proud father answers: "Seventeen pounds."
The bartender is puzzled, concerned and a little suspicious. "What happened? He already weighed 25 pounds the day he was born!"
The Steelers fan father takes a slow swig of his beer, wipes his lips on his shirt sleeve, leans into the bartender and proudly says:
"HAD HIM CIRCUMCISED!!!."
GO STEELERS

Thanks Wally

What A Difference

What a difference a day makes and a good night's sleep! I'm feeling much better today, sorry about whining in yesterday's post...

I can't believe the Pittsburgh penguins blew a three nothing lead against Nashville last night... What is going on with their power play? It's bad enough were not scoring on the power play, now we're giving up short handed goals! I can't even blame the loss on powder blue uniforms this time...

The Steelers are six point favorites over San Diego for Sunday's home playoff game. I think the game will be much closer than six points, similar to the last time when Pittsburgh won 10 to 11. Pittsburgh's mayor declared a black and gold day today like that was necessary (most pittsburghers wear black and gold every day, lol) and made a wager with San Diego's mayor.

It's a pretty lame bet if you ask me. I have a better wager in mind for the two mayors...
If Pittsburgh wins and we know they will, San Diego's mayor must wear a Big Ben jersey and sing " Here We Go Steelers" continuously for an entire day.

If San Diego wins... Who am I kidding, San Diego doesn't have a chance.

Sleepless in Pittsburgh

I battled insomnia last night, and insomnia won... I feel like 20 miles of bad road today. At least I have nothing going on today, no appointments or phone calls to make. So I can try to sleep and recover a little bit today.

Drinking hot tea this morning never tasted so good, I'm hoping the caffeine kicks in soon. On a bright note I see that Pitt Girl is bloging again ! You can find her over at OMGPittsburgh as Jane Pitt.

Have you checked out the show 10 Items Or Less on TBS? It's a pretty funny show. You can take a simple eight question quiz to find out which position you are suited for at the greens and grains. As you can see I'm clearly management material...

A Fine Day

I'm doing something I rarely do these days, drinking a Guinness in the afternoon. My friend Sally made me boneless hot wings this afternoon and I decided to have a cold Guinness as an afterthought.

I could probably get used to this...

Rendell contributor under investigation

Rendell contributor under investigation
Pay To Play is all over the media these days. After the blatant attempt to sell a U.S. Senate seat in Illinois the media is choosing to Finally report on Pay To Play...

This is politics in the United States. Politicians sell influence. Why would any individual or company contributed thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars to a candidate's political coffers without trying to buy some kind of influence? People are not that altruistic, at least in my opinion. Where are all the Campaign finance reforms we were promised years ago? As long as we have career politicians we will have Pay To Play politics.

The Penguins Win

Last night the Penguins beat Atlanta 3 to 1 at Mellon arena breaking a five game losing streak. The penguins also scored a power play goal after 34 attempts... Is it a coincidence they were wearing their black at home jerseys? I hate when they wear the powder blue uniform.... It seems like they always lose when wearing powder blue.

The game was broadcast on FSN as opposed to versus. I really prefer when the game is broadcast locally, Versus Broadcasters Suck in my opinion. Hopefully the penguins continue to play well the second half of the season. Otherwise they do not have a chance of making the playoffs.

Pandora Internet Radio

It's no secret that I like to listen to music throughout the day. Using the computer makes this very easy even though I cannot use my hands. I remember when CDs first came out, I would make a ton of mix tapes to play in the car when I traveled. Today that's accomplished with a few clicks of the mouse.

Internet sites like www.theradio.com and www.pandora.com are two sites that I like to use. By typing in a song or artist the web site generates songs by that artist and similar artist. It's a great way to discover new artist music with similar styles to music that I already enjoy. The best part is it's free and very easy to use.

Monday Madness

Well the last few days I have not had very much to blog about, but it's time to catch up now. I had a few friends over New Year's Day to watch the rose bowl. It was nice to see everyone again even though PSU lost. A really nice thing happened during the game that I thought I would mention here.

My friend David was over and if you remember someone stole his scooter Christmas Eve. He has cerebral palsy and uses his scooter for better mobility. As we were watching the game he decided to sit on the floor and lean against the couch for better back support. When he did this Nala went over to him and laid down beside him, placing her head in his lap and stayed that way for quite some time. I think dogs have a certain way about them that know when people could use a little extra attention. It was such a beautiful thing to see, I wonder if anyone else noticed?

There is some great news regarding his scooter and an anonymous donor. As soon as something becomes final I will let everyone know...

The penguins have been getting crushed, I blame the powder blue uniforms. Later this month I have tickets to the wheeling Nailers, a minor league hockey team in wheeling West Virginia. Friends of mine Dan and Kathy gave me the tickets for Christmas, I'm really looking forward to going. I have seen minor league baseball a few times at the Washington wild thing stadium, I actually prefer it to pirate baseball. I'm hoping the Nailers are just as exciting to watch.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be playing the San Diego chargers on Sunday here in Pittsburgh. The Steelers beat San Diego in the regular season but were unable to score a single touchdown. Hopefully the offense uses the bye week to recover and will come out and put some points on the board.

I'm really happy with the way my van is now running. I used the van on Saturday and the lift worked perfectly and the van started without being jumpstarted! Maybe the money was well spent this time.

President elect Obama estimates spending $775,000,000,000 for our economic recovery plan. I thought I would write it out for everyone using the correct amount of zeros... That's one big ass billion dollar number if anyone's keeping track.

Bucks judge upholds marriage by online minister - Evening Sun
I told you I was legal! Several years ago I went online and became an ordained minister through the universal life church. It's always nice to have an extra credential in your pocket...lol so if anyone needs a marriage ceremony conducted in bucks county Pennsylvania, I'm willing to perform a lovely service at 50% off the going rate.

The best part of being an ordained minister is it drives Beth nuts, she tells me I'm definitely getting a hotter room in the afterlife for this. So print off this coupon for 50% off your next marriage, confessions are free if they contain details. Definitely a hotter room in my future.

$18,000,000 Game

Well USC was unstoppable yesterday in the rose bowl against Penn state university. The second quarter was terrible for Penn state. The good news is the university made $18,000,000 for playing in the rose bowl. Hopefully the team does well again next year! It was a great season and the players, coaches and staff did a fantastic job.

Rose Bowl

Are you ready for some football? Penn State University will be playing USC today in the rose bowl, as you can see I'm wearing my official Penn state Rose bowl sweatshirt! I'm really hoping Penn state wins.

Before the Penn state game I will be watching the winter classic in Chicago. Outdoor hockey will be coming to us live from Wrigley field .... I just hope the Detroit red wings lose big ! I'm still holding a grudge from last year's Stanley cup...
