Slashdot | Amazon Caves On Kindle 2 Text-To-Speech

Slashdot | Amazon Caves On Kindle 2 Text-To-Speech
I find this to be a disturbing development. Many individuals with disabilities benefit from the Text-To-Speech feature on the Kindle 2. By leaving it up to individual publishers to provide access, many individuals with disabilities will not have this technology. I have been considering purchasing a Kindle 2, but this development coupled with the price tag keep me from making the leap.

Penguins Win Again
5 to 4 Again ! The Penguins beat the Chicago Blackhawks last night in overtime. New Winger Chris Kunitz made an immediate impact with two points, an assist and a goal ! We could sure use the points, I think there's hope of making the playoffs yet.
The next game is Sunday afternoon in Dallas. Hopefully by then Crosby will be back in the lineup.

Officials: Obama to Leave Up to 50K Troops in Iraq Through 2011 - washingtonpost.com
Officials: Obama to Leave Up to 50K Troops in Iraq Through 2011 - washingtonpost.com
I think 50,000 troops is a lot more than anyone expected to be left in Iraq. It seems some of the campaign promises Obama made are already changing. Was it because he did not fully understand the situation in Iraq? I certainly do not want 50,000 noncombat troops left in Iraq, bring our troops home like you promised. Concentrate on Afghanistan, it's time for Iraq to stand on its own 2 feet. Just my opinion....

Three questions

1. Which do you prefer, jeopardy or wheel of fortune?
2. What is your favorite vacation spot?
3. What is your next automobile going to be?
I love Jeopardy, if at all possible I never miss an episode. The only problem is when I miss a question, expletives have a tendency to leave my mouth. I cannot stand wheel of fortune.... Does that make me a snob?
My favorite vacation spot is New England (Cape Cod), I get the ocean without the intense sun and burning temperatures. Plus the seafood is amazing.
I would like to say it's going to be a new Ford Mustang Gt, but its going to be an adapted minivan, but not for a few more years.
Spring Break
I was listening to ABC News this morning and a story came on regarding spring break in Mexico. It seems the state department is warning college kids about attending spring break in Mexico. Mexico has seen a dramatic increase in kidnappings and murder due to the drug cartels.
The State Dept advises kids, that generally spring breakers are not targeted and to keep a low profile while in Mexico. Have the state department adviser's ever been on spring break in Mexico? There's nothing low profile about drunken college kids on spring break. They have to be the easiest targets anywhere in the world.
I've spent enough time in Tijuana to know firsthand. I say, spring break in the United States. Do not give Mexico our tourism dollars. It's bad enough that Arizona has become the kidnapping capital of the Americas, second only to Mexico City. I think it's a disgrace that Arizona had over 300 kidnappings last year. Why put yourself at risk? If I was heading to spring break it would be Florida or Nevada this year. Stay out of Mexico and spend your money here in America.

Ryan Whitney

The Pens just traded Whitney to the Ducks.........damn I liked Whitney ! We get Left Winger Chris Kunitz and prospect Eric Tangradi from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Ryan Whitney. Kunitz was part of Anaheim's Stanley Cup team in 2007, and has 35 points in 62 games this season.
Thursday's Thoughts
Only 22 more days until spring!! It feels like spring already here in Pittsburgh, the temperature was in the fifties yesterday and will be again today. My winter hibernation may finally be over.
The Pittsburgh Penguins beat the New York islanders last night at Mellon arena 1 to 0 in the last 2 minutes of the game. Don't let the score fool you, it was an exciting game with Pittsburgh putting a lot of shots on goal.
While I was at the center for assistive technology on Tuesday, I ran into a graduate student Alexandra Jefferds. It turns out she is a first time author, which is quite a feat considering the class work at the school of health and rehab science. Her book Earlier Heaven is available at her website and you can also read the first five chapters online. Here is her summary:
Alexandra Jefferds, a master's student at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Health and Rehab Science, has recently published a novel, Earlier Heaven. It is a work of anthropological science fiction that addresses disability, nontraditional families, and spiritual betterment.
In Hearth, the Earth-like afterlife of those who have died untimely deaths, young Holocaust victims have come of age and Martin Luther King, Jr. still preaches. Theresa, a young runaway who uses a wheelchair, is given refuge by Jamie and his husband Gabe. Jamie has severe, debilitating asthma, and he bonds with Theresa through their shared experience of disability. Though Jamie is intent upon sheltering Theresa from those who would use her, he finds himself unable to protect her when she chooses to take part in a risky plot to save the city from destruction. As the years pass, Jamie struggles with worsening health and a husband who clings to the status quo. He raises adopted children, explores gender identity, and strives for spiritual purity, always haunted by the memory of a girl whose cosmic destiny will bring Earth and Hearth into a new age of peace.
At the book's website, http://www.earlierheavenbook.com you can read the first five chapters and also access the purchase link. Both print and ebook options are available, to fit your reading preference.
I have not read the book yet, but it is on my reading list. I just think it is such an accomplishment to write a book while in graduate school. Many of us say we would like to write a book someday, here is a young woman who has accomplished that goal.

Wheelchair Functions
I received a few emails asking what types of functions my wheelchair does and why I need this type of wheelchair. Permobil makes an excellent chair, and they have a pretty good website. You can check out a video of the functions I need on a wheelchair by clicking Here Then power functions.
The power tilt, leg rest and recline are for pressure relief and the seat elevator allows me to access different Heights. It's important to be able to reach light switches etc. and because I have limited arm movement, the seat elevator comes in very handy.
Sitting in a wheelchair all day it's important to have the right functions to facilitate movement. This prevents skin breakdown, and life threatening pressure sores. Without these functions an attendant would have to reposition me every 30 minutes. Just imagine sitting in your office chair and not moving all day long, how long could you sit without the bones in your butt pushing through your skin?
It's an expensive chair but in the long run it's cheap over the course of six years. One hospital stay could be over $100,000 for a pressure sore, surgery and all the complications that go with it.

Too True, Too Funny
Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House. One is from Chicago, another is from Tennessee , and the third is from Minnesota .
All three go with a White House official to examine the fence. The Minnesota contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. “Well,” he says, “I figure the job will run about $900: $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me.”
The Tennessee contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, “I can do this job for $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for me.”
The Chicago contractor doesn’t measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, “$2,700.”
The official, incredulous, says, “You didn’t even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?”
The Chicago contractor whispers back, “$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire the guy from Tennessee to fix the fence.”
“Done!” replies the government official.
And that, my friends, is how the new stimulus plan will work.
Thanks Wally

Doctors, Doctors, Doctors

I started off my morning having my van jump started at 6:30 AM due to an ongoing battery problem.... (check van problems in previous post) fortunately I have a super deluxe battery charger/starter from Sears now. So Beth and I were off to Oakland to see my urologist. It turns out she has no idea why my catheters are turning purple either. She ordered a Cystoscopy which needs to be scheduled for the operating room, her assistant will get back with me on that date....
While I was there I met a PMR (physical medicine and rehabilitation) Dr., Doctor Lieberman who happens to have a spinal cord injury. It was so refreshing to have a Dr. Wheel into the room in a power chair, wearing similar hand braces, who knew exactly what was going on with my condition. You would be surprised at how many times a Physician asked me to squeeze their hands after I explain my injury level. I'm sure other programs have doctors with disabilities, but it was very refreshing to see a PMR Dr. With a spinal cord injury.
After that exam I drove my wheelchair over to CAT, the center for assistive technology at UPMC for a new wheelchair evaluation. I thought I would start the process since my wheelchair is six years old already. I expect it will take a few months to go through the insurance process, letter writing campaign before I take delivery. Because of the new insurance regulations it's much more difficult to get the type of advanced technology in a wheelchair that I require, paid for without a fight.
So after being poked and prodded most of the day it's time to relax with a cup of hot tea and watch the news. I have some exciting news about a new author but that will have to wait for another blog.

FDA OKs Stem Cell Therapy
We may start to see some progress with regard to stem cell research if recent news is any indicator. According to a news piece I saw from NBC, the FDA has cleared the first-ever human trial using embryonic stem cells for the treatment of a medical condition. This is not the panacea we would all like to see that would get individuals up and walking, but it is a very promising start.
The trial will be led by Geron, a South Bay biotech company. They will start testing their stem cell therapy on spinal cord injury patients based on the success they have already seen while treating rats with spinal cord injuries. The rats were able to regain movement during treatment. So, they have their precedent, if not in the human community quite yet.
And, for those who oppose the use of embryonic stem cells because of the possibility they came from voluntarily-terminated pregnancies, take heart. This trial will be doing nothing of the sort. Geron will use stem cells harvested from fertility clinic embryos, which were not going to be used and were soon to be discarded.
As for timing, the trial could start as early as this year. Geron will choose approximately 10 people who were injured within seven to 14 days of the start of the trial. So, at least for now, the therapy will not be helpful for those injured before this time. But, this is only the beginning and, if they are successful with this group, we will see the types of injuries treated in the future grow exponentially.
The somewhat cruel irony is that those in the peer group overseeing the Geron trial were all injured much earlier than the protocol guidelines, precluding them from treatment for now.
I am optimistic this single trial will spur many more companies to follow suit and we will start to see significant progress in a short period of time. We have waited much too long for a viable treatment to spinal cord injuries and it will be fascinating to watch what happens. The flood gates have been opened and this is a very exciting time for scientists, doctors, and patients who may be able to benefit from this precedent.

Appointments
I just made it back from a late lunch at Cheddars which was really very good. I should say the food was very good, the service was OK. The waitress seemed a little surprised I could order for myself.... lol. And I'm lucky Beth was with me, someone parked right beside my van (in the stripes) blocking my side doors and my lift.
On the way home I received a phone call from my Attendant care service provider. They wanted to make an appointment for this week, unfortunately I already have two appointments with doctors. They explained they needed to see me before Friday and would have to call back to reschedule some time later today. Why would anyone try to schedule an appointment with less than 48 hours notice? Because I have a disability do they expect me to always be available?

Guest Blogging
I was recently asked to be a guest blogger over at Questions on Dogs and Cats . The website publishes every Sunday and I have an article published today, with two additional articles coming. I really enjoy reading this website, and you may as well. As it turns out the owner and I grew up very close to each other, it really is a small world.

Sons of Anarchy -
This was my favorite show this year and I can't wait until it comes back on this fall.
I think Audra Mae sings this song so much better than the original by Bob Dylan. The Pepsi commercial would be so much better with her singing it, at least that's my opinion.
The Penguins Win

Yesterday's game in Philadelphia was very exciting to watch. Although initially FSN was broadcasting some basketball game which had me panicking thinking I could not watch the penguins. They started broadcasting about 2 minutes into the game which was perfect timing for the first fight. The flyers are real goons and when they're not picking fights they are taking dives, trying to draw penalties.
The Penguins won 5 to 4 in a real run and gun offensive. The game was back and forth until the last minutes. Philadelphia's goalie came out after the Puck, then realized he would get a delay of game penalty. He dropped the Puck like a hot potato, and Crosby put it in the back of the net.
While watching the penguins I decided to sample a cold beer, Hoegaarden. If you read the online reviews some will say its a sweet citrus wheat beer. If you ask me I would say it has a nasty aftertaste. I only had about half the beer when I had to switch to a Guinness just to get the taste out of my mouth! I realize I'm no beer drinking expert, but I did not care for Hoegaarden.

Weekend Rambling
The Pittsburgh Penguins were off last night so I ended up watching a DVD, Burn After Reading, with George Clooney and Brad Pitt. I think the producers of this movie should have burned the script after they read it. In my opinion this was one bad movie... Any suggestions for a good DVD?
Today at 1:00 PM the Penguins are playing the Philadelphia flyers, which means there will be plenty of dropping gloves and pulling jerseys. Of all the teams in the NHL I hate filly the most! Hopefully the penguins blow them off the ice.
Tomorrow the Penguins play the Washington capitals, so it's a pretty full weekend for this hockey fan. I still have a few specialty beers in the refrigerator from last week's sample pack. I may break out a few today for the game, and will have the details in tomorrow's Blog.

Today's The Day
Today's not like any normal day to me, when February starts I watch this day approach. Today is the day of my accident 10 years ago. Somehow this anniversary is different. I woke up this morning to the buzzing of my wheelchair being charged, I took a drink from a straw attached to my drinkaide cup that is attached to my hospital bed and spoke into a microphone asking my computer what time is it? The computer in a feminine voice promptly says " the time is 5:47 AM".
I wiggled around as much as I could to loosen the stiffness and soreness in my neck. The burning neurological pain in my arms and Butt was immediately there, but my attitude had changed from previous years. I no longer view my wheelchair as the enemy, it's a tool I use for mobility. It enables and empowers me. The computer allows me to independently control my home by voice. The straw lets me get a drink any time I want without asking anyone. I'm as independent as I can be.
Would I like to go back and have the body I had in 1999? Absolutely, without a doubt, in a heartbeat. But I'm realistic, I don't play the what if game, I take my life one day at a time. I'm extremely fortunate to have family and friends around me, who love and care for me. Being a person with quadriplegia can be bad, but there's much worse things that can happen in life
Today's The Day, it's up to me what I do with it. What are you going to do with your day today? I'm going to spend it being thankful for the people in my life, not the physical attributes that I lost.

The penguins put on quite the offensive show last night at Mellon arena. The Pens beat the Montreal Canadiens 5 to 4 in regulation play. Please disregard yesterday's post where I said the penguins sucked... lol
They're still in 10th place, but if they keep playing like this I feel we can really move up to the eighth position, to make it into the playoffs. It was a very exciting third period to say the least. The penguins were on a mission and would not be denied, let's hope their style of play and attitude carries over to this weekend.

Online Shopping

I admit it I do some of my shopping online, it's so much easier for me to sit at my computer and order exactly what I want and have it delivered to my front door. Some times shopping can be difficult in a power wheelchair, crowded aisles, poor customer service etc. make online shopping very attractive.
Even though the Pittsburgh Penguins suck, I still love the team. I wanted to purchase a new Malkin jersey, so I started my research online. Most of the sites wanted around $135 plus shipping and handling. That was way outside my budget, so I kept looking. A few short clicks later I found a site that offered the exact jersey I wanted for $88.98 no S/H ! I was giddy with excitement. I used my auto fill, put in my credit card and within minutes the transaction was completed.
Then I got to thinking.... Maybe this was too good a deal, how could this site be so cheap? I started looking around the web site and found no phone number. Alarm bells went off in my head, I kept looking. The grammar on the site explaining a money back guarantee looked like English was their second language. I checked my mail and received a confirmation notice from a gmail account, so I just started praying. Hopefully I was not a victim of a scam for being so cheap.
Seven days went by and no Malkin jersey, I fired off a quick e-mail asking where my jersey was? Another three days and the doorbell rang! The jersey arrived from China! I'm not going to mention the website but it clearly has US in the name. I'm sure with a little google research you can easily find it. The jersey has official looking NHL tags, and is perfect! It looks like a game quality jersey, the stitching is perfect and extremely well made, damn it looks good!

(Ohio sled hockey team)Much like the Mighty Penguins here in Pittsburgh, Cleveland has a Sled Hockey Team for individuals with disabilities. Their team is called the Cleveland Barons, check out a great video of the team in Action
As a Pittsburgher I usually do not find anything attractive about Cleveland, but for these guys I will make an exception... lol

Separated twins are doing well at Children's Hospital
Separated twins are doing well at Children's Hospital
Here's a great outcome for two little girls! Children's hospital successfully performed a 24 hour operation to separate conjoined twins from Cleveland. I always think how fortunate I am to have access to world class hospitals here in Pittsburgh. Individuals and families come from around the world to see these doctors and surgeons.
Last year my mother was very ill and spent several months in Magee Women's Hospital, I really believe she would not have survived in a lesser facility. Today she's back at home and although she continues to have health concerns, I was able to visit with her yesterday. Without access to upmc (University of Pittsburgh medical center) yesterday's visit would not be possible.

Speech To Text Software
I received a few emails asking how I'm able to complete a blog every day with no use of my hands. I use speech to text software (Dragon Naturally Speaking and also Windows Speech Recognition). I have dragon naturally speaking 10 on my desktop and I use Windows Speech Recognition on my laptop.
My laptop has vista as the operating system, and voice recognition software is built into the accessibility features. If you have Windows Vista I highly recommend using this feature. To access this just go to start, all programs, accessories, ease of access, voice recognition. Then complete the training and you're on your way. It's especially helpful if you have difficulty typing or even spelling for that matter.
Windows speech recognition does not have all the bells and whistles that dragon does, but it does provide excellent recognition and best of all it's free! Many of my friends who are able bodied use speech to text software now for their e-mail communication.

Wow, I can't believe they fired coach Therrien ! It's been a very disappointing season but I'm not sure he is the problem. One thing's for certain, I'm sure this personnel move got everyone's attention in the entire penguins organization. Let's see how they play this afternoon realizing no one's position is safe.

Specter: The man in the middle
I say good job Sen. Specter for helping to pass the stimulus package, and shame on the House Republicans for voting the straight party line.... not one Republican thought it was a good idea? Not one?

Happy Valentine's Day
Well the weekend is here and it happens to be Valentine's Day! I hope everyone is having a great day and remembering the important people around them.
I wanted to follow up on Thursdays hot wings post. I thought I was meeting two friends but we ended up as a group of seven! So instead of individual orders of wings, we decided on pizza and different specialty beers. Having a larger group worked out great, I was able to meet two new friends.
McGrogans has about 150 different types of beer on hand. So we decided to get two six packs and head back to my house, where each of us could sample several bottles.
I had several samples of new beer: Buffalo Bills Blueberry Oatmeal Stout, Sapporo, Bass, and Troegenator Double Bock to name a few. I really enjoyed the blueberry stout the best. It had great aroma and very strong blueberry flavor.
We were also fascinated with Sapporo, not so much with the actual beer.... But the can, it's not made out of aluminum but Steel. At least a magnet sticks to it so it has to have some steel in it. I'm no beer aficionado by any means so if you have a favorite, I would love to hear about it!

SSD Needs Your Help

Many of you may not know that I have a service dog, her name is Nala and she is a Susquehanna Service Dog . I have had her almost nine years and she is a fantastic animal who gives me independence like no other technology. With her help I'm able to have less Attendant care hours, function more independently and feel safer in case of an emergency.
I received an e-mail this week from the Director of SSD explaining that their annual fund raising event PAWSABILITIES is in jeopardy due to the economy and a few sponsors being forced to withdraw from this event. This important fund raising event takes place in Harrisburg Pennsylvania, on March 14 and 15th 2009.
Here is where you come in, if you're able to make any donation no matter how small it would do so much good for so many people. Please visit their website to make a donation ! Another way you can help is to forward this to individuals you feel would like to contribute.
Having a Susquehanna Service Dog has dramatically changed my outlook on life. It's a great organization that needs a little extra help in today's economy.

Pen's Shootout At Mellon Arena

Did you see last night's game at Mellon arena? The penguins won 2 to 1 in a shootout against the San Jose sharks! Billy Thomas, a local boy from fox chapel scored his first NHL goal to give the penguins a one nothing lead in the second. San Jose scored late in the third to tie it up at 1 to 1, forcing a shootout.
Marc Andre Fleury was fantastic in goal all evening and denied everyone in the shootout. Crosby came through with a lightning goal giving the penguins the win and two points for the night. If the penguins are going to make the playoffs they need a few more shootout wins!
I'm looking forward to Saturday night's game, hopefully the penguins can get back on track and make it into the postseason.

The Power Of Blogs
I truly am amazed by the volume of people reading my Blog today! While reading all the comments I make sure I go visit that person's blog, some are really incredible and I will be a return visitor.
I started this blog as a way to express myself and talk about issues that are important to me. This forum covers many topics from assistive technology to the Pittsburgh Penguins, not just disability related topics. As a person with a disability it's part of my life but not my entire life. I think I'm very lucky to have this forum today with so many readers.
If I can get one message across I would like it to be... I may do things differently than you, I may use assistive technology to accomplish the same goals, but my disability is one aspect of my life. Just like you I have friends, I go out to restaurants and bars, sporting events and deal with everyday frustrations and accomplishments... I hope you stop back and find out what I'm into next week, I never know what's around the corner but hopefully it has a Ramp !

Blogs of Note
Wow, imagine my surprise to learn that this blog was yesterday's Blog of Note ! I received over 1400 visitors yesterday, and the best part was 31 comments. I thought Super Bowl weekend was great (250 visitors) but I doubt I will ever have another day with that many visitors. I read each of your comments and really appreciate the time it took, and your thoughtful words.

Doctors Update
I just made it back from the doctor's appointment, on the way down it was raining but on the way home it was dry. The Doctor could not have been nicer, she took her time with the exam and made all the necessary referrals. It's nice when things work out!
Now I just need an appointment at the Center for Assistance Technology at Pitt to start the process of getting a new wheelchair. I figure this is a one-year project. The doctors office is making the arrangements for a new mattress with a local durable medical equipment supplier. Hopefully this all works out well. For a general practitioner she was very knowledgeable and helpful!

Doctors Appointment, Car Wash and Mattress Shopping
How's that for a title? Yesterday I was finally able to get my van to the car wash and wash off this winter's salt. I go to a local automated wash, which does a pretty good job. I'm somewhat of an expert when it comes to carwashes, after all I worked in one for eight years (put it in neutral, don't steer and don't use your breaks). As I'm writing this the rain is Crashing down, naturally... Anytime you wash your car it rains the next day right? A van wash was $3.50 now it's $13.00!
I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon so I am hoping the rain stops. Otherwise I will be one wet quadriplegic when I get there. The doctor's office is several blocks away so I plan on driving my chair. This is my third attempt at getting there this winter. The first time they told me I was a week late for my appointment and had to reschedule. The second time I was snowed in so... it goes to figure it would be raining cats and dogs today.
I have a list of things to discuss with the Dr. and because I'm Mr. Monk I put that list into my phone. This way I can be sure to talk about the prescriptions I need and referrals for durable Medical Equipment like my wheelchair, and hopefully a new mattress.
Nice segue into mattress shopping right? You see it's not as easy as walking into your local mattress factory and giving them your visa card. I need to get a prescription, contact a durable Medical Equipment supplier, wait a few months then they come and see me then wait a few more months for delivery.... Oh the joys. I also need to research the mattress myself because chances are the Dr. nor the durable Medical Equipment supplier has any idea what type of mattress a high level quadriplegic needs to prevent pressure sores and skin breakdown.

Last Night's Grammy Awards

I have to admit that I do not keep up on today's newer music, but I was really disappointed with last night's Grammys. The sound quality of the program was very poor, it was difficult to understand the singers lyrics. I think the mixing was off but that's just me.
I did enjoy performances by Kid Rock and Kenny Chesney. I was surprised to learn Robert Plant and Alison Krauss had the album of the year, that's how out of current music I am. I did manage to listen to a few of the songs off that album this morning, and I really liked it.
Jimmy Buffett tickets went on sale this morning at starlake Amphitheater for his concert in June, but I did not even try to get tickets. I think I'll be listening to the concert on the Internet this year for free and enjoying a few cocktails. Some things are not recession proof....

Google Ocean
There's a new feature on Google Earth that lets you explore the oceans. Since 75% of the world is covered in water it make sense for Google Earth to cover this aspect as well. This morning I was checking out the Atlantic Ocean around Florida, then moved into the Caribbean waters and finally was exploring the Pacific Ocean around the Hawaiian Islands. Google has some amazing video and it's a good way to beat the Pittsburgh winter's !
I plan on watching the Penguins play the Detroit Red Wings today at 12:30, hopefully the Penguins home winning streak continues. They are only two points out of the playoffs and could really use another win at home.

Digital Tv Put On Hold
After nearly a year of enduring commercial after commercial warning the American people that their analog television sets would no longer work after February 17, Congress in its infinite wisdom has postponed the changeover another four months until June 12th.
The Obama administration blamed the Bush administration for not preparing the American public adequately for the changeover. I say where have these people been living? Every day I'm forced to endure commercial's, news reports ect.. stating February 17 is the big day!
The commercials remind me of groundhog day, it's the same thing every day. For those of you still watching analog TV on rabbit ears get with the program, pick up your conversion box so the rest of us can get on with Digital Tv !
The Nielsen Co. estimates that more than 6.5 million U.S. households that rely on analog TV sets to pick up over-the-air broadcast signals still are not ready. People who subscribe to cable or satellite TV or have a newer TV with a digital tuner will not be affected.

World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers

For the sixth time in franchise history the Pittsburgh Steelers are the world champions! The only NFL team to win six championships. Last night was a fantastic game no matter who you were rooting for. The Steelers scored the winning touchdown with 35 seconds remaining, defeating the Arizona cardinals 27 to 23. Earning Santonio Holmes MVP of super bowl 43.
After the Steelers leading the entire game the cardinals took the lead 23 to 20 with only 2 minutes and change left on the clock. They say defense wins championships, but last night it was the offense that stepped up to the challenge and scored a touchdown when it was needed the most.
What a fantastic season for the Pittsburgh Steelers! The only disappointment to the evening was some minor rioting in Oakland. Some Pitt Students broke windows at the original O, set fires and turned at least one car over.
The city is finalizing a victory parade which I think is well warranted even in today's economy. It certainly wasn't pretty, but it's another World Championship for the 60 minute men of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Wheeling Nailers Hockey Game

Last night I had the opportunity to attend a wheeling nailers hockey game and it was fantastic! Friends of mine Dan and Kathy gave me tickets for Christmas this year and I had such a great time, even though the nailers blew a 3 point lead against the Mississippi Seawolves and ended up losing 4 to 3.
As you can see from the picture we had really great seats although I don't think there is a bad seat in the entire arena. About 2500 fans attend each game. Like minor league baseball in Washington pa, the wheeling nailers score a 10 on value. The tickets were only $13.00 each and parking was $3.00. I thought soda there was a little expensive at $2.50 a bottle but most things were pretty regular.
The nailers giveaway a lot of merchandise throughout the game and have the fans involved on the ice at intermission. They do a promotion called chuck the Puck. You purchase a Puck prior to the game, put your name on it and during intermission everyone throws the Puck onto the ice trying to hit a target for money and a gift certificate. There must've been 1000 Pucks hitting the ice at one time.
Checking the penguin score, it seems they lost last night too.... The penguins are in 10th place and may not make the playoffs. The nailers are in first place and tickets only cost $13.00, you due do the math!
