Last night I made plans to have coffee with a friend at a local coffee shop/Internet café. What I didn't realize was their business had slowed down and they were completing some remodeling, so they started closing in the late afternoon.
When I arrived, they were inside working on a few things and said they were closed but for me to come on in. I explained the situation about making plans to meet someone, they said no problem.
My friend came and we had our drinks and spoke for a half hour or so. When it was time to pay the bill, they would not take any money. Do you think you could get that service from Starbucks or a big-box chain?
Sure, sometimes small businesses may not be able to offer the best prices when competing with the big box chains. I certainly believe they provide better quality products. Thats why I prefer to spend my money locally, where I get the absolute best service.... Thanks Aces Cyber Cafe !

Klingensmith Health Care
I was out the other evening and ran into a couple of guys from Klingensmith healthcare. Although I have not used their services I plan on it in the future and here's the reason why.
When I talk to people about rehabilitation or durable health care products, some people get it and other people never will. I quickly got the sense from these two guys that they understood what rehabilitation was all about and were really concerned with their clients needs....
Has anyone used this company? Any thoughts or ideas?
It's always nice to run into rehabilitation professionals who advocate for their clients not against them.

Reader Question
It's always nice to hear from you readers, I enjoy all of your comments and getting to your blog's to read what you're doing. I have a few questions?
Where is everyone from?
What do you do?
Who is your favorite sports team?
Do you have any pets?
Thanks in advance for sharing, I hope you have a great day and I'm looking forward to getting to know a little bit more about each of you.

Sidney Crosby and Friends
It's so much fun to write my blog in the mornings after a Penguin victory. Last night the Pens defeated the Montréal Canadiens 6 to 1 !
Sidney Crosby scored a hat trick, his third of his career... and Chris Kunitz had a four-point game with three assists, but more importantly scored his first goal of the season. It's nice to get that monkey off his back.
In other sporting news, the Philadelphia Phillies took game one against the dreaded New York Yankees. I can honestly say I'm not a Phillies fan or a Yankees fan, but if I have to choose it's anybody but the Yankees. Plus it would be nice for the state of Pennsylvania to have back to back World Series Championships.

Post Your Pumpkin
Catching Up And Rambling on
I've been a little bit laxed in my blog writing this week. And would like to catch up on several topics. First of all, congratulations to the Philadelphia Phillies for making it into the World Series for the second time in a row. Hopefully they defeat the dreaded New York Yankees and bring the trophy home to Pennsylvania ! Living in Pittsburgh I'm not much of a baseball fan, since the Pirates have had a losing season almost the last 20 years. Baseball is a little slow for me, I prefer hockey.
I was reading the USA Today yesterday and they had an article that was rather well-written regarding wheelchair users. The article concentrated on why individuals who use wheelchairs for mobility are forced onto the roads instead of using sidewalks.
Every year over 600 individuals lose their lives due to lack of properly maintained sidewalks and adequate curbs cuts. The cost for small municipalities to update all of there existing sidewalks to meet the ADA guidelines is prohibitive. I believe it is prohibited because only a minority of individuals use the sidewalk. It's not important to the masses so it does not get funded. Wheelchair users continue to lose their lives and the general public either does not care or is clueless.
I myself am forced into the street quite often due to lack of curb cuts for sidewalks. Sometimes it is frightening when a car speeds by unexpectedly. It's not like I have rearview mirrors,,,,,
Sunday's football game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings was very exciting. I have to admit I was not a believer in the black and gold this week. I'm glad they proved me wrong and got a victory out of the game..... The University of Pittsburgh and Penn State University both won Saturday which made my day.....
I had a campfire Saturday evening and listened to some of the hockey game on the radio.... the Penguins lost 4 to 1 against New Jersey.... that sucked, but the fire was nice and I wore my new Columbia jacket and was toasty warm.

A Great Day for Hockey
Last night the Pittsburgh Penguins battled back from a two to zero deficit, to beat the Florida Panthers in a shootout at the Civic Arena.
Brent Johnson was in goal for Pittsburgh last night and although he gave up two goals in the first period, he played a spectacular game. But the offense was all Sidney Crosby playing in his 300th NHL game.
In the third period, Sidney scored one goal and then managed to score his first ever shorthanded goal tying the game. He wasn't finished scoring for the night, he managed to put in the only shootout goal for the Penguins win. Wow what a game.

Learning a language free online
I just started learning Spanish online for free at a website called livemocha.com it's a really interesting site and I enjoy the lesson plans.
I doubt that I will become fluent in Spanish from taking the lessons, but it's fun and most of all it's free.... I'll let you know how my progress goes, pick any language you want and give it a try too.

LITTLE JOHNNY: MY DOG
Little Johnny's teacher said, "Johnny, your essay on My Dog is exactly the same as your sister's."
Did you copy hers?, she asked.
Johnny replied, No, teacher, it's the same dog
A door-to-door salesman comes-a-knocking and 10-year-old Little Johnny answers, a beer in one hand and a lit cigar in the other.
The salesman says, Little boy, is your mommy home?
Little Johnny taps his ash on the carpet and says, "What the hell do you think?"

Jeff Reed cited for public intoxication
The Steelers placekicker Jeff Reed was cited for public intoxication last night after the Steelers game !
It's the second time this year that he has been in trouble with the law...from the PG
"Earlier this year, Mr. Reed, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and criminal mischief after police said he damaged a paper towel dispenser and harassed employees at a Sheetz convenience store in New Alexandria in February.
In that incident, witnesses told police that Mr. Reed, 30, went into the store bathroom and then became infuriated that there were no towels in the dispenser. He began banging on the dispenser and hurling profanities at employees, even after leaving the store."
It seems to me that he may have a problem with alcohol and he may want to explore treatment.... Besides, beating Cleveland is really not that big of a cause for a celebration. At least no paper towel dispensers were injured in this altercation.

Weekend Update
Well so far, it was another good weekend for my sports teams. Penn State University, the University of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Penguins all won this weekend. It was fun to watch and hopefully the Steelers win today against the Cleveland Browns at 1 PM.
The weather sure took a turn for the worse this week with temperatures in the 30s. I needed to update my wardrobe with a new winter coat. So I looked online, read some reviews and compared prices.
I decided to go with an old favorite, a Columbia three in one jacket. I have had these types of jackets before and it always worked out really well, providing warmth and comfort.
I chose the Bugaboo, shown below. After trying it on I was still able to get good movement with my arms. Sometimes jackets are bulky and make driving my chair difficult. It's not the case with this jacket. I think it will do the job nicely for many winters to come.

The Penguins Win In a Shootout

Last night the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the North Carolina Hurricanes 3 to 2 in a shootout, on the hurricanes home ice. It was a very exciting game to watch to say the least.
Chris Kunitz really came through for the team, scoring the winning goal in the shootout. It was his first goal of the season. Sidney Crosby also had a goal in the shootout, he makes it look easy. Malkin is only scoring 20% of the time in a shootout, they really need to take him out of the lineup for shootouts.
The Penguins go 5 and 0 on the road, a first for starting off the season. Right now I think they are the best team on the ice..... but I always think that.

Wicked Wednesday
I can't believe it's already Wednesday, this week is going by quickly. I started watching Sons of Anarchy on Hulu, instead of staying up until 11 PM, I know I'm officially old.... The only downside is I'm a week behind on episodes.
It's officially fall, I know this because the battery in my van needed to be jumpstarted on Monday for my appointment..... serves me right for not plugging in my battery. The electronics on my van drain my two battery's, so anytime the temperature falls below 30°, it will not start independently. It's an ongoing thing as frequent readers can attest.
How about those Pittsburgh Penguins? Starting the season off 5 and 1 ! Hopefully the trend continues for the defending Stanley Cup champions. I'm looking forward to enjoying the rest of the week watching hockey and staying warm inside.

Brace Repair
Today I am off to see the Prosthetist, for those of you who don't know what that occupation is, it's a person who makes orthotics. Get your mind out of the gutter... I Need to get my brace repaired. The foam padding, velcro and leather need to be replaced. I use the brace every day on my right arm, so it gets a lot of use.
What a weekend for my sports teams, in hockey the Pittsburgh Penguins crushed Toronto 5 to 2. All of my football teams, Penn State University, University of Pittsburgh and the Steelers all managed victories. It was exciting to watch.
While I'm out today I plan on picking up a new floor lamp, for beside my desk. I like to have a lot of light in the room when I'm on the computer. Hopefully I find one at Lowes thats not too expensive.

Penguins and Flyers
Last night the Penguins defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 5 to 4 in Philadelphia. In my opinion the referees left a lot to be desired, missing a lot of penalties against Philadelphia.
And when did hockey become a cannibal sport ? Kris Letang had his finger bit in a skirmish with Philadelphia goon Scott Hartnell..... with seconds left in the game, one more reason to hate Philadelphia. They continue to exhibit dirty play on every shift.
The Penguins have the night off, their next game is in Toronto tomorrow night. Hopefully they can ride last night's victory into another win.

Eight years in Afghanistan
As of today we have been fighting in Afghanistan for eight years. I consider myself to be pro military but I have to question our tactics. It's as though we're trying to fight a sanitized war.
In my opinion, we have two options. Either totally withdraw from Afghanistan or make a commitment to all-out war. The powers that be are talking about adding an additional 40,000 troops or fighting the war with unmanned vehicles and special forces troops.... Both plans fall short in my opinion.
The United States has the ability to destroy large areas through airstrikes. Last week one of our outpost was attacked and eight soldiers lost their lives. Why was there anything left surrounding this outpost? I think it's naïve to fight this kind of war. Our enemy attacks and escapes, either pull out or unleash the fury of war.

#1 Sports Town

Pittsburgh Pennsylvania has been named the number one sports city in the United States and Canada according to the sporting news. It's the first time Pittsburgh received this honor and I'm wondering why?
Basically it's because Pittsburgh does not have a pro basketball team and the Pittsburgh Pirates have the worst record in baseball almost every year. This dramatically hurts Pittsburgh in the rankings. But because the Steelers won the Super Bowl last year and the Penguins won the Stanley Cup, the city could not be denied this year.
Congratulations Pittsburghers, the rest of the country is recognizing what a great sports city we really are.
And yes, Sidney Crosby does look small compared to big Ben. Crosby is 5 foot 11, 200 pounds, big Ben is 6 foot five and 241 pounds....... Crosby just plays like a giant on the ice. The Penguins play at home tonight, let's go pens!

Tuesday's Thoughts
Today is a beautiful October morning and I have a new outlook. I'm really enjoying reading again. The Kindle 2 is a great way for me to read new books easily.
I finished The Lost Symbol and a 2nd book, The Art of Racing in the Rain , by Garth Stein this week. The art of racing in the rain was recommended by a professor I had at the University of Pittsburgh, it's an easy read and if you liked Marley and Me, you should check it out. It's written from a DOG'S perspective, which is always good in my opinion.
“That which you manifest is before you.”
—Enzo the dog.
I'm looking forward to relaxing this afternoon, just me and my little dog checking out the New York Times bestseller list for our next read. I love sunny October days.

Identity Theft
I received a phone call from my credit card company about some suspicious charges. As it turns out I'm the latest victim of identity theft. Happy birthday to me. It seems some individual has my credit card number and charged over $1500 in just a few hours. Thankfully my credit card company was on top of the situation. Hopefully I'm not responsible for these charges after all the paperwork is completed....
I'm really careful about my numbers and shred all of my documents. It makes me wonder how this happened.... Whoever has my number will hopefully be caught and receive the punishment they really deserve.... Just another beautiful day in the neighborhood.

Beers on the Deck

Last night some friends stop by and surprised me with some microbrews from Erie Pennsylvania. It was a great surprise and we ended up on the deck enjoying the beer and fire.

When the fire was finished we were able to check out the highlights of the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders game. The Penguins won in a shootout, starting the season 2 and 0 !
Penn State University beat Illinois yesterday so it was a good sporting day for my teams. Tonight the Pittsburgh Steelers play late, hopefully they follow suit and get a victory.

Saturday Morning
I slept in an extra hour today and for an insomniac like me that's great. The Penguins won last night 3 to 2 at home against the New York Rangers. It's a great way to start the season.
This morning I'm enjoying some bacon and fresh pineapple for breakfast, listening to a little Jimmy Buffett. Something tells me it's going to be a good day. Although I can't provide breakfast for all of you, here's a little Jimmy to get your day started:

It's a Hockey Night in Pittsburgh

This week the Penguins received their championship rings, tonight the world champion Pittsburgh Penguins will lift the Stanley Cup championship trophy on home ice and raise the championship banner at Mellon Arena for the 3rd and last time. The Penguins have played at Mellon Arena since 1961, but will be moving across the street to the brand-new Console Energy Center next year.
The Pens play the New York Rangers tonight and I'm looking forward to the new season and another run at the Stanley Cup. I wish I was going to the game, but it sold out in minutes and I was not fortunate enough to get tickets. Let's Go Pens !
