If you ask any person with a disability who uses a wheelchair for mobility what the phrase "wheelchair bound" means to them, I'm sure you'll get a livid response.
I use a wheelchair for mobility, I may be Velcroed in with a chest strap, but I am definitely not bound nor should I be pitied. Let me clear up the stereotype that I am unable to function in life because I use a wheelchair. In fact, it's just the opposite. My wheelchair enables and empowers me to live an active life. I am limited because of a lack of accessibility (lack of ..ramps, transportation, automated doors, stairs, no curb cuts or simply crowded aisles while shopping).
I use a Permobil C-500 power wheelchair that has several seating functions. A seat elevator, leg extensions, tilt and recline as well as a speed package. All of these functions enable me to be more independent. Without my permobil I am stuck at home, not bedbound but dependent on others.
For a recreational wheelchair, I have the Action TrackChair which resembles a small tank. It's 37 inches wide with two tracks as the driving force. It's definitely an all-terrain outdoor wheelchair that I use for bow hunting. It powers me through the woods, as well as over or through practically anything. In it, I am definitely not disabled nor wheelchair bound.
Having the right equipment directly translates to independence. Stereotypes like wheelchair bound are the chains that limit individuals with disabilities in the minds of the general public. Encourage everyone you know to stop using negative terms like wheelchair bound!
