Friday Cold
Good morning sports fans, I wish I could say I was feeling good but unfortunately I have a bad cold and respiratory thing going. As I sit here drinking tea and wearing my very stylish rabbit fur mad bomber hat, I'm wondering how long this day can last.
I already made phone calls to the bank, my doctor and two pharmacies.......I have two other appointments, fortunately they will be coming here. Then I can start my weekend and hopefully recover from this cold.
I'm looking forward to the NHL All-Star game this weekend even though two of my favorite players (Crosby and Malkin) will not be playing. Who are you looking forward to seeing in the All-Star game?

18,087 People Attend Each and Every Game
I think most people feel relatively invisible while attending sporting events, especially in a crowd of over 18,000 screaming fans. But I learned that was not the case Tuesday evening when attending the Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Islanders hockey game this past Tuesday evening.
As a half season ticket holder I get to attend 20 games per season at the Consol Energy Center. I am not able to attend all 20 games, so I've given a few of the games away to friends and family.
Imagine my surprise when I rolled up to the gate and one of the ushers said " I didn't see you last week ". I never formally met this guy but he was aware I didn't make it to Saturday's game. I always said hello to him and thanked him for holding the door for me, but didn't realize he noticed me. Thanks George!
So I made it inside and got onto the elevator. The elevator attendant said your a season ticket holder right? " I didn't see you last week" . That's two employees at the Consol Energy Center to notice their customers.
Now I get to my seat and the usher says..... you guessed it.... " I didn't see you last week, is everything okay ? "
You have to love Pittsburgh, the people, the work ethic and how friendly the city actually is !

The Shape I'm In
If you have not read Lone Survivor yet, what are you waiting for? It's always been my belief that attitude is everything. No matter how many times life may knock you down, I hope you always have the conviction to get back up.
When you cannot stand on your own, I hope you have a friend to help you. Once you are standing, have the courage to help others stand alone against their adversities.

Steelers - Here We Go Steelers 2010 - 2011 version
The Boys are going to Texas to pick up the 7th Superbowl Championship on Feb. 6th !
Last night the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the New York Jets 24 to 19, winning the AFC championship!
Today the Steelers are 2.5 point underdogs to the Green Bay Packers. I love being the underdog, I know the Steelers can beat Green Bay and win their seventh Superbowl victory!

Minimalism
I am finally getting rid of some of the items in my bedroom that I no longer use. Not to worry, they are all going to very loving homes lol
Recently adopted by friends, a stereo, books, CDs and believe it or not cassette tapes........
As soon as I transfer my music collection to my external portable hard drive, I can sell off over 100 CDs. I like the new look with less clutter and definitely less to dust, and besides, I have a new eight point deer head coming from the taxidermist to make room for soon.

Dinner Out
I do not have dinner out very often, but last night I went out to dinner with a few old friends ( Mark, Tressa and Maddison ) and Susan and Beth, we all had a great time. We went to Damon's restaurant which was very nice.
We sat by the fireplace and enjoyed some great barbecue chicken, french fries and salads. The service was very good and best of all, the restaurant was not very crowded.
Have you ever tried to get a table for six at a crowded restaurant? Thankfully we went early and this enabled us to talk and relax and play the digital trivia on the numerous television screens.
It was nice having a night out and catching up with friends. Hopefully we can all do this more than once a year, I really enjoyed myself.

AFC Championship Game
The AFC championship game is coming to Pittsburgh and I am no longer a Jets fan !
Everyone including myself thought New England would win. I was really hoping that the Jets would pull out a victory so the game could be played here in Pittsburgh.
I think Pittsburgh can win against the New York Jets and go on to this year's Super Bowl ! The Penguins play on Saturday and the Steelers will be playing at 6:30 PM on Sunday. It looks like another great weekend for the Pittsburgh sports fan!

Pens and Steelers
Yesterday was a fantastic sports day here in Pittsburgh! I started off watching the Pittsburgh Penguins playing the Boston Bruins in Boston at 1 PM. It was a great game and the Penguins won 3 to 2 ! Jordan Staal is definitely back and playing at a very high level, scoring the winning goal.
At 4:30pm I switched hats to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers play the Baltimore Ravens here in Pittsburgh. The Steelers scored first and I was very excited (7 to 0), but by the end of the first half the Ravens were on top (21 to 7).
The Pittsburgh defense would eventually force several turnovers which Pittsburgh was able to turn into points. The Steelers won (31 to 24) and will be playing next week in the AFC championship game.
We have to wait for the outcome of today's game between the New England Patriots and New York Jets. The game starts at 4:30 PM and will be played in Foxboro Stadium.
Everyone seems to believe the New England Patriots have this game in the bag. But this is the NFL folks, any team can win on any given day. If the New York Jets come away with the victory, the AFC championship game will be played right here in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Naturally I became a New York Jets fan today.

5 Inches and Counting
It looks like we have about 5 inches of new snow outside this morning and the snow is still falling...
The sidewalk has been shoveled off and salt put down but I am effectively snowed in. If I need to get out in case of an emergency I can, but realistically 5 inches of snow is too much to travel in using my wheelchair.
Most sidewalks will not be clear and forget about the curb cuts.....
I'm not up to going anywhere anyway, my chest is congested and I'm coughing. Fortunately I only needed assistance once last night to Quad cough. What's that you ask?
Quad coughing is assisted coughing, Beth pushes on my diaphragm similar to performing the Heimlich maneuver. This forces air through and enables me to clear my lungs.
When I am sitting in my wheelchair I am able to throw myself forward on my chest strap and get the same results. It's not pretty to watch, but at least I can breathe better.
I plan on finishing my new book A Dog Named Slugger by Leigh Brill today, and enjoying the rest of my tea. I am about halfway finished with this book and would like to recommend it to you. If you are a animal lover I am sure you will enjoy it as much as me.

Losing Sucks, a Respiratory Infection Sucks More
Last night I watched my favorite sports team, the Pittsburgh Penguins play a fantastic game against the Boston Bruins.
It was a low scoring game with the Penguins leading 2 to 0. The 3rd period came....... life was sweet.

Our best goalie was in the net
Our defense was on the ice
I was ready for the elevators
So with a few minutes left in the game, I made my way down the elevators, into the parking lot, into the van and turned on 105.9 to listen to the last few minutes of the game.
How the hell does Boston score twice in 12 seconds and again to take the lead with only three minutes in the game? They end up getting the empty net and winning 4 to 2 .... WTH
On top of all that, I have a respiratory infection and sound like a fog horn and feel like crap.

Monday Morning Quarterback
It looks like my prediction of the Philadelphia Eagles playing in the Super Bowl this year was completely wrong. Congratulations Green Bay.
The Pittsburgh Steelers will be playing the Baltimore Ravens next Saturday at 4:30 PM here in Pittsburgh. I think we have a real chance of beating the ravens. It's playoff football so anything can happen, my predictions were already wrong so I will not bore you with another one.
Tonight the Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Boston Bruins, I'm looking forward to watching the game live. It seems like the Penguins have a lot of players injured so winning may be more difficult tonight at home. Let's Go Pens !
I have a few more phone calls to make and need to follow-up about my wheelchair motors ..... hopefully your Monday is going great.

Saturday's Ramblings
Yesterday I picked up the new Dodge Van. I'm happy to say that I'm very pleased with the purchase and hope to enjoy having the Grand Caravan for many years. I still need to follow up with the insurance and a few other details but at least it's sitting in my driveway.
This morning I finished reading Full Dark No Stars by Stephen King. I really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to my next kindle read A Dog Named Slugger .
I'm a little disappointed with Chesapeake rehab. They did not check the motors in my permobil C- 500, they are definitely making a strange noise. I will have to give them a call Monday morning and arrange for someone to come down and look at the wheelchair.
Hopefully they will understand the problem and be able to order the necessary parts, and not have to take the wheelchair into their shop. I'm also concerned that the motors will just quit and leave me stranded.
I plan on going to train with my new service dog next month, I do not want a faulty wheelchair leaving me stuck in a hotel room while completing training.

Permobil C-500 is Back
I received my C- 500 back from my durable medical equipment supplier yesterday with four new tires and two new batteries. They also replaced the bearings in the caster, but the motors are still making a strange sound.
I plan on taking it out this weekend to a local mall and see how it performs. I personally think there's something wrong with the motors, they never made this type of sound before.
Later this evening I will be picking up the new van, which is very exciting. The way the Dodge 2010 Grand Caravan is configured, I can ride in the back or the front passenger seat area. It's been a while since I have been up front so I'm looking forward to that.
If I remove the front passenger seat and sit in the rear, I will be able to do weight shifts while traveling. In the 2001 Ford full-size van I had plenty of room to do weight shifts.
The minivan is much smaller and space will be an issue. Weight shifting becomes especially important on long trips. I really should shift my weight every 20 minutes, although I admit I do go longer.
Pittsburgh has about 2 inches of snow but I don't think the snow is going to continue, so the roads should not be an issue. I will be posting pictures of the van and giving it a thorough review sometime soon. Have a great weekend, wish me luck!

PATF Loan Program
I received word from Gretchen at the Pennsylvania Assistive Technology Foundation regarding the loan for my wheelchair accessible van yesterday. Everything was approved at an interest rate of 4 %, which I am very thankful for. Without the PATF, I would not be able to purchase this van.
The application process was really easy to complete, I simply downloaded the forms, faxed a copy then mailed the hard copy. Within a week I was approved. It was really painless and quite professional.
In the next few days I will be trading in my 2001 Ford van for the new 2010 Dodge Caravan. The new Dodge will be much more reliable, easier on gas and just what I need for my mobility requirements, I am really excited.
Today my permobil C- 500 will be delivered from Chesapeake rehab. I'm looking forward to getting back into my wheelchair and on with life. My C- 500 has the speed package, lights etc. that make it much quicker on the streets and let's face it, when the temperatures are in the 20's it's better to be quick outside.
I am also donating my first power wheelchair, an invacare Ranger X to Chesapeake rehab. They will use it as a loaner wheelchair for individuals to use while their wheelchairs are being repaired. It's so important to have a backup power wheelchair. While the repairs were being made to my C-500, I was still able to get around using my backup chair.
The next big undertaking will be next month when I get my second service dog from SSD . My current partner Nala is retiring. I am really looking forward to working and training with Misty Morning. If you would like to make a donation to SSD, please click here

The Good and the Bad
First the good news, the pressure sore on my right foot seems to be healing up nicely. I believe the new socks and sheepskin slippers are making a world of difference. I plan on wearing them all winter. I will worry about getting other shoes in the spring.
I spoke with Peter from mobility works yesterday and he did not receive the paperwork from the bank regarding my loan for the new Van. So I will not be picking it up today, possibly Saturday. I am a little disappointed as I was looking forward to the new vehicle.
The bad news is I sold my Pittsburgh Penguins hockey tickets to my friend Dan for today's game because I thought I would be picking up the new Van. Dan is going to take his four-year-old son to his first hockey game, so I can't be too disappointed. Looks like I'll be watching the game on television tonight.
Later this afternoon I will call Chesapeake rehab and find out when my wheelchair will be returned. Hopefully it is repaired correctly, the motors are working properly and it has two new batteries and four new tires.... This week is definitely busy and one long waiting game.

Tuesday's Thoughts
Yesterday I made several phone calls following up on projects currently in the fire. If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know that my permobil C-500 wheelchair has been in the shop since December 13. It should be fixed and delivered by this Friday!
I am currently sitting in my old Chairman 2-K Permobil wheelchair. It may have a few squeaks and may not be as fast as my C- 500 but I'm thankful I have it as a backup wheelchair. ....
Tomorrow I may get to pick up my new 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan if everything goes through at the bank! I spoke with the salesperson from Mobility Works yesterday and I am waiting to hear back to confirm our appointment. I also contacted my insurance carrier to make sure I would be covered on the new vehicle.
The old van will need cleaned out tomorrow or tonight and the passenger seat reinstalled. I really do not have that much stuff in my old van so it should not take that long. The worst part will be taking out the aluminum portable wheelchair ramp and threshold ramp.
If I can get everything accomplished tomorrow I have the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey game to look forward to! The next few days are going to be really busy and I'm relying on the stars to align in the universe to make all these things happen. It's definitely a lot ask for, but I'm excited and looking forward to everything!

Saving Money
Everyone enjoys saving money and I am no exception. I thought I would pass along a website I use often, http://www.dealnews.com/ . Every day they have different deals, I'm not saying that I check this site every day. But when I do, I often find a good bargain.
My latest purchase was a Seagate Expansion 640 GB USB Portable Hard Drive, I was able to purchase it for $47 including shipping. Amazon.com is selling the same drive for $87 .
I just thought I would pass this site along, do you have any money-saving websites?

No Joy in Mudville or Pittsburgh
My new years day started out with a lot of hope and anticipation but by the end of the evening it was clear, there would be no joy in Pittsburgh.
Penn State University started off very well against Florida in the outback bowl. Several friends came over to watch the game and I thought Penn State would win, by the middle of the fourth quarter I began to have my doubts. It's impossible to win a football game with five interceptions.......... Florida 37 PSU 24
I remained hopeful, after all the winter classic was starting at 8 PM. Once again my team scored first and I thought the Pittsburgh Penguins would win.......... halfway through the third period it became clear the game was lost. Capitals 3 Pittsburgh 1, in a very wet New Year's day classic.
The only good news was the University of Pittsburgh fired their new football coach after only 16 days on the job. Michael Haywood was charged with domestic violence and spent the weekend in jail.....
Hopefully the university does a better job recruiting a new football coach. From what I understand they only interviewed one candidate, Mr. Haywood.
Pitt has a great and long-standing tradition of winning football games. You would think they would be able to interview more than one football coach, right?
