Keeping What's Left: A Vanity Makeover

Monday 27 May 2013

This piece started out so sad...but now I'm having trouble parting with it.

I had to remove about 40% of the veneer as it was buckling on all 4 side drawers and 2 of the 4 panels. Let's just say that heat guns work well for veneer removal...and they can also cause 2nd to 3rd degree burns. Ahem...not that I'd know.

The top and middle drawer were in near perfect condition and I wanted to save those. I'm not a wood purist, but if there are pieces left that look great, I want to preserve that.

Here is after the veneer removal:

And here it is today:

I changed out the pull on this drawer with something I had on hand.

I had to take the mirror off because it was so fragile, but that makes this piece even better. Hang the mirror on the wall for a vanity, but it can double as a desk!

I.am.loving her.

Happy Memorial Day and thank you to all our Veterans!

Gilded Armoire: A Second Makeover

Sunday 19 May 2013

A few years back, I redid our guest room. I never got around to writing up a full room redo, because before I finished it, we needed to ditch the guest room idea and give our boys separate rooms.

I first posted about this armoire/dresser here but to give you a recap, here is the original picture:

I went all white and kept the same hardware. And I loved it for a long time.

But then I tried to sell it...and no one wanted her. So I changed her up...and now I love her even more. If I had a little girl, this would be in her room!

I took a cue from Cassie at Primitive & Proper and used gold Rub n Buff for a gilded effect on the details.

I also added new hardware...crystal knobs with a gold backing. Typically gold isn't my thing, but I love they way they look with the gold accents.

This one is for sale locally, so shoot me a message if you are interested!

This little gal came to me already painted...but painted badly. Drips, chips, you name it.

It just took 2 coats of white and one round of glaze to glam her up. She's all set to go to Carver Junk Company this week for their monthly sale this weekend! I kept the original pulls because they just looked right with the keyhole.

My head is spinning between blogging, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram. I have no idea where to focus more of my energy. I just know that blogging about pieces has recently become more work than fun. How do you juggle all of the social media?
