I do not wear much jewelry these days but I did manage to find a really good deal on a new watch before Christmas. It's difficult for me to read the clock from my bed without my glasses and this wristwatch makes it easy for this insomniac to check the time in the middle of the night.

The numbers are large and it's luminescent so even without my glasses I am able to see what time it is. I like the way it looks, how about you, what's your favorite watch?

I recently received an early Christmas present, the Tachyon Micro HD Helmet Camera from Beth. This little camera is perfect for attaching to my wheelchair, crossbow or rifle. It's also waterproof up to 100 feet which means I can take it hunting and not be concerned about damp whether.

Tuesday evening I took the camera to the Pittsburgh Penguins game and filmed myself going from the parking lot to my seats. It was an interesting project and I plan on putting it on youtube sometime this week. It presents what it's like for a wheelchair user navigating the Console Energy Center.

It's very simple to use, only two buttons. I am really looking forward to using this to create some great hunting videos next season. If you're looking for a gift for the outdoors man or huntress on your shopping list, I highly recommend this camera!

I really have been neglecting my blog recently and it's time to catch up....

Let's see, I went deer hunting in Missouri for a few days this month with Dreams Become Reality. It's an outstanding organization and I had the absolute best time possible. Chris and Tina were excellent host, and I could not ask for a better time. I also managed to take a nice five point 160 pound buck that we donated to the Missouri food bank. Check out my other blog if you're interested in hunting.

My Thanksgiving was very nice , quiet which I enjoy. Like many of you I over ate and watched football.. I have so many things to be thankful for it doesn't seem right to list a few.

Misty Morning my beautiful and talented service dog turned 3 on
Thanksgiving, so we had a little birthday party for her with some extra special treats.

Tomorrow is the first day of rifle season here in Pennsylvania for white tailed deer. I will not be going out Monday but possibly Tuesday. Good luck to all the hunters, I hope you're successful and most importantly safe.

I have been reading a great deal on my Kindle Fire. The first book "Until Tuesday" is very good. It's about a disabled veteran and his service dog. The second book "Bag of Bones" by Stephen King, I have not started it but plan to this week.

I really enjoy using the Kindle Fire, it has everything at my fingertips. Movies, books, music or applications it's all there. I like to watch movies on it even though the screen is not very large. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is good on any size screen, lol

So that's the 411 on what's been going on with me. Now it's time to do a little shopping online, trying to beat the crowds on cyber Monday....

Also time to lose the beard don't you agree?

After being on vacation all week hunting in Missouri, I came home just in time to receive my Kindle Fire. I have to say I really enjoy using it although I cannot find the text to speech feature.

It is very easy to use, the screen is bright and the amount of multimedia now placed at my fingertips is staggering. It's nice to watch videos, check e-mail etc. all from my desktop. What are your thoughts on the new Kindle fire?

I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today.

That's why I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can. This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.

My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to help this University.

Tuesday Thoughts, Transportation Inclusion

New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg has recently made incredibly offensive remarks directed at wheelchair users who want greater access to the city’s yellow taxi fleet.

Bloomberg stated that “it’s too dangerous” for wheelchair users to hail a cab in New York City and that most drivers would “pretend they didn’t see them”. He also said wheelchair users “sit too far from the driver to establish a dialogue” and therefore “they would not tip well”.

It’s time to call out the offensive remarks of Bloomberg by showing your support for a fully-accessible NYC taxi fleet. Sadly, only 231 of the city’s 13,000 taxis are accessible to wheelchair users.

Did you ever notice that the people who are against inclusion are always in the majority and receiving every benefit society has to offer.....

I wonder if the mayor's attitude would change if he was the person being discriminated against. Is it wrong to want equal access?

This morning I had the privilege to attend the Transitional Employment Consultants, awards breakfast. I received the Donald Angelone Rehabilitation Professional award for 2011.

I would like to thank everyone who nominated me and all my friends and family for attending today's breakfast. It was quite an honor and I really appreciate all the kind words that were said.

I certainly could not advocate for others if a long list of people did not advocate for me first.

Favorite Season

I absolutely love this time of year, hunting season. I have had so much going on the last few weeks. The days hunting, getting out with friends and family have been incredible. I have already harvested two doe with my crossbow and I'm looking forward to getting a shot at a very promising eight point that I have seen a few times already.

It's also Pittsburgh Penguin hockey season! I had the opportunity to attend the season opener this week, the Penguins brought home a victory, the food was great, and the Energy Center was rocking!

Last night they lost in overtime to the Washington Capitals. I hate Washington almost as much as Philadelphia. Saturday night is the next game, I'm looking forward to watching them play.

Fall is definitely my season, what is your favorite time of year and why?

Officer Derek Kotecki

We lost another police officer last night in the line of duty, Officer Derek Kotecki. He was an 18 year veteran of the Lower Burrell police force. His K-9 partner Odin, had to be removed from the scene, he would not quit barking or leave Officers Kotecki's side.

You can read the story on the Pittsburgh post-Gazette Here . I have several friends that are in law enforcement and I have tremendous respect for the men and women who choose that profession. My thoughts go out to his wife, family and children.

Letter to the Editor: Bill confounds longtime hunter

As a concerned citizen, I am writing to voice my opposition to House Bill 1854. This bill was introduced by Rep. Godshall on Sept. 19. This legislation limits the harvesting of white-tailed deer to one deer per hunter each year, and makes absolutely no sense as far as a game-management strategy.

As a lifelong hunter, I am very concerned with all the wildlife in Pennsylvania and feel this legislation is counterproductive to proper white-tailed deer management.

Accessible Hunter

I strongly believe that the Pennsylvania Game Commission should have the right to issue permits as they see fit. God knows we do not need some legislator imposing a statewide one deer per hunter rule.

The minute politicians get involved in anything it goes downhill extremely quick. There may be areas in Pennsylvania that need to limit the number of doe license, but a statewide referendum is asinine!

Last night the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Canucks in Vancouver 4 to 3 in a shootout! It's a great way to start the season getting a win on the road. The other great news is the Penguins scored on the power play not once, but twice!

I am really looking forward to the home opener next week. It's exciting to watch the puck drop on home ice!

I think the Penguins are the best team in hockey (I say that every year) and I'm looking forward to a very exciting season. Let's go pens!

Wheelchair Access

My archery club, Falcon Archers recently installed a new ramp to the clubhouse! Prior to the new ramp, I had to take a portable aluminum ramp to every meeting.

It did not take the club long to recognize the need for a permanent ramp. They are a great group of men and women dedicated to the outdoors and made it happen.

The new ramp not only provides physical access to the building, but also says we are an all inclusive organization. Everyone is welcome with or without a disability. Thank you Falcon Archers !

Tonight the Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Detroit red wings at 7 PM, to kick off the preseason... I can't believe it's hockey season again, I am really looking forward to seeing the team back in action.

Hopefully it will not take long for Sidney Crosby to get back into the lineup. I know Malkin will be phenomenal this year after missing much of the 2010 season.

My prediction is the same as always, the Pittsburgh Penguins will win the Stanley Cup!

Good Friends

Good friends are hard to beat. Last night my buddy Mark came over to my place after work and we shot my crossbow. I wanted to make sure I am ready for Saturday (the opening day of archery season, doe).

Mark had never shot a crossbow before and I think he enjoyed sending the bolt down range. My Parker Buck Buster crossbow is dead on. It felt really good to end the session with a bull's-eye.

He also assisted me with getting my broadheads on my new arrows and we also customized my Action TrackChair with a new hitch that was manufactured by a good friend of mine Justin Ubel.

You can check out his company Axxess Creations for yourself. As a person with a spinal cord injury, Justin understands exactly what it takes to get back out there.

I will be posting pictures of his work in a day or two. I'm very lucky to have good friends like Mark and Justin who enable and empower me to do the things I enjoy. Thanks so much guys!

Football Season

I did manage to watch a little bit of football on Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Although I have to say it was not very enjoyable.

Penn State University was crushed by Alabama on Saturday and the Pittsburgh Steelers were a bust in Baltimore.. Notre Dame University lost to Michigan, so it seemed like I could not buy a victory. At least my fantasy football team won....

I can't wait till hockey season starts!

Archery Season

I am really excited, there is only one more week until archery season starts here in Pennsylvania on Saturday, September 17. I have all my gear ready and big plans for opening day with Whitetail Mgt. Associates in Pittsburgh, doe hunting.

My Parker buck buster 175 crossbow is driving tacks and I am ready to take the shot if and when it is presented. The key to successful archery hunting is staying vigilant, being ready to take the shot when it becomes available.

It will be really exciting to take my action trackchair out hunting. Hopefully I have the opportunity to harvest a doe. I plan on using the wheelchair to drag the deer back to my Van. It would be sweet if my old backpack knife gets some use on Saturday.

I know it's going to be one of those weird days already.... my phone was Velcroed onto my tray upside down. my tea was left on the counter with the lid off in a difficult wheelchair spot.... fixable with some careful planning and a file folder ramp / slide onto my tray.

Survival Knife

For many years I carried the Air force Survival Knife attached to my backpack while hiking and camping throughout the US and Canada. It was an excellent knife, saw and hammer on many excursions.

I decided to attach it to my Action TrackChair this weekend with plastic wire ties. I may not be able to use it independently, or ever really need it anymore, but its a nice reminder of my youth. Pictures will follow.

Adapting and Changing

Last night I had to make a break from my past, and move one step ahead in order to recognize how my body works now with quadriplegia.

It's nothing very dramatic, but I traded my long time hunting rifle in on a model that works better for a person with quadriplegia.

Even though I have not shot that particular rifle at a deer in 15 years, it was still difficult letting it go. I thought about all the adventures I had with it. The long shots, hunting trips with friends etc.

Sometimes it's difficult to recognize my limitations physically. I resisted change and that put limitations on me. Today's blog is not about hunting or rifles it's about willingness to change or adapt to new situations.

Disability forces me to make changes. But you do not have to be disabled to recognize the need for change in your life. What are you resisting? What changes do you need to make to be more adaptable and successful in your own environment?

Elusion Camo

I have been emiling Lee the owner of Elusion Camo about the difficulties getting back into the woods as a hunter with a spinal cord injury.

He took it upon himself to design a camouflage poncho with accessories that will cover both myself and my action trackchair. I should have the completed design very soon for my September crossbow hunt.

This is just one of the things I have going on right now in regard to hunting. When the package arrives from Elusion Camo, I will post pictures, you may have to look closely to find me! Yes, its that good.

Here is a company that definitely cares about all hunters including those with disabilities! Thank you so much Lee and all your team members for making camouflage accessible for everyone not just the able-bodied.

My Time of Year

We are approaching my favorite season , fall. The weather is turning cooler and I am finally able to sit outside for longer than 15 minutes without requiring treatment for heat exhaustion.

What is your favorite season and why? Fall is mine by far, in addition to the cooler temperatures it's archery season, and as my friends and family know, that's like Christmas to me.

Everything is coming together with equipment and the way I am shooting. Now I just need Mr. and Mrs. Whitetail to cooperate with my plan.

I received some very exciting news from my friends at Dreams Become Reality . They would like me to speak at their BOW BASH this Saturday. This great charity benefits individuals with disabilities and gets men and women into the outdoors.

There are a few other surprises that I will be mentioning later on this week. But I urge you to visit the Dreams Become Reality site and attend this event on Saturday if at all possible . Chris and Tina are quality people who really are advocating for all of us to enjoy the outdoors.

On Thursday morning I was on my way to the library, it was a beautiful morning, the sun was shining and I was enjoying the roll there.

As I crossed the street approaching the library I was almost hit by a speeding Cadillac ... this car came around the corner from nowhere . It was actually pretty scary.

I always try to be extremely careful when navigating the streets . I realize how dangerous it can be in a power wheelchair . It's very similar to when I was operating a motorcycle, people have a hard time seeing a rider or wheelchair user.

When people wonder why we need curb cuts and well-maintained sidewalks , this is a perfect reason ! I often have to travel on the side of the road because of inadequate sidewalks, placing me at odd's with traffic .

Five Years To Freedom

I am currently reading Five Years to Freedom by James N. Rowe on my Kindle. It's a very interesting book and I would like to recommend it to everyone.

We can certainly learn from his experiences as a POW. I can't imagine spending five years in captivity under the conditions he endured.

We all think we have problems in life, until we learn about the experiences of others.....

I realize my posting has been a little hit or miss lately. I have been deciding whether or not to continue this blog.

It contains over 1700 posts, my thoughts over several years and a record of my adventures... It's not something easily put aside or killed off.

I enjoy reading the comments and interacting with other bloggers throughout the world. But I also enjoy expressing my opinions (without interruption or being told I should not feel a certain way or have a certain opinion) does this make me narcissistic? Maybe.

The blog averages over 100 hits a day these days, down a great deal from what it once was. The comments are fewer and I'm wondering if it's time to pull the plug or at the very least pullback.

What are your thoughts, would anyone really care if Pittrehab went on hiatus or shutdown entirely?

Six Months Together

It's hard to believe that Misty and I have been partners for six months already. Time certainly has gone by quickly.

A partnership between an individual with a disability and a service dog is a very special relationship built on trust, interdependence, respect and love.

The bonding process takes time. Time to develop the trust necessary to be a true working team. Able to face new challenges together each day, problem-solving new obstacles and of course overcoming pirate adventures.

As I write this Misty Morning is laying beside my right wheel tucked in between the counter and my wheelchair. She could lay anywhere in this entire house, she chooses to lay beside me. I choose her, that's how it is.

National Veterans Wheelchair Games

Today thousands of athletes from around the country are in Pittsburgh to compete in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games. I would like to wish every competitor the best of luck.

I think it's amazing that Pittsburgh has the opportunity to host this extremely important event. All the athletes are winners, just by competing!

Vacation Wrap-up

The vacation officially ended last night at 11 PM when we arrived back home. If you have been following my blog for the last week, you have seen what an incredible time I had on Cape Cod.

It was extremely relaxing sitting by the Atlantic, reading my Kindle and watching my service dog retrieve flip-flops and training dummies. I was so proud of Misty, she did an incredible job the entire trip.

The food was incredible as always. Eating whole belly clams deep-fried at Woods , raw oysters at Cabby Shack , washed down with ice cold Corona's.

I also stopped over at my favorite winery, Plymouth Winery which I think produces the best tasting wines I have ever had.

But the best part of the trip was seeing my friends and enjoying their hospitality. Matt and Shelagh are incredible host, opening their home and of course their grill! I look forward to seeing them every year.

Well I took a few days off and basically regenerated my brain. I am feeling much better now, operating on a few days with sleep. Insomnia really takes a drastic toll on my body and mind.

I am sure it did not help that the air-conditioning unit for the house went bad this week. Fortunately the repair technician came the next day. I was surprised that it did not cost an arm or a leg to repair. And the houses is a very comfortable 74° again.

My accessible van also went in for maintenance this week. Every six months the ramp needs inspected , cleaned and lubricated as well as the chain for the kneeling feature. So everything should be good with the Van until January.

Thanks to all the people who left concerns and e-mailed me, I really appreciate your thoughts.

Sick and Tired or Tired and Sick

I have not slept for the last two days and I'm feeling really bad right now. I'm not sure if I am exhausted or coming down with something.

Last night the air-conditioning unit went on the fritz . Thankfully the repair technician came this morning and made the necessary repairs . I really hope I start feeling better soon but up until then I will be off-line . Enjoy the rest of your day while I try to recover. I really hope I start feeling better
